What Is FTL Freight

Your Freight. The Entire Truck. Nothing Else.

Full Truck Load (FTL) is a freight service where a single consignment occupies the entire truck β€” no other freight is loaded, no additional stops are made, and no other customers share the space. The vehicle moves directly from your pickup address to the delivery destination.

FTL commands 81% of Australia’s road freight revenue β€” it’s the preferred mode for mining, agriculture, construction, retail, and manufacturing businesses moving significant volumes interstate. The economics are clear: the more you move, the lower the cost per unit β€” and the fewer handling points means significantly less risk of damage or delay.

Speed Post arranges FTL freight across Australia with a fleet suited to all freight types β€” standard dry vans, refrigerated trucks, flatbeds, and oversize configurations available on request.

Why FTL Is the Right Choice

Direct. Dedicated. Delivered.

  • βœ“
No co-loading β€” your freight is the only cargo on the truck, reducing handling, damage risk, and delays caused by other consignments
  • βœ“
Direct point-to-point routing β€” no depot transfers, no intermediate stops, no hub-and-spoke delays β€” pickup to delivery in a straight line
  • βœ“
Faster transit times β€” dedicated vehicles move on your schedule, not a consolidated freight network’s timetable
  • βœ“
Lower cost per unit at volume β€” as shipment size grows, FTL cost per pallet or per tonne drops significantly compared to LTL
  • βœ“
Maximum control β€” specify loading procedures, timing, and special handling requirements β€” the truck is yours
FTL vs LTL

Full Truck Load vs Less Than Truckload β€” Which Do You Need?

Choosing between FTL and LTL comes down to your freight volume, timeline, and priorities. Here’s a clear comparison to help you decide:

πŸš›

Full Truck Load (FTL)

  • βœ“Entire truck dedicated to your freight only
  • βœ“Direct pickup to delivery β€” no intermediate stops
  • βœ“Faster transit β€” no detours for other customers
  • βœ“Minimum handling β€” loaded once, unloaded once
  • βœ“Lower cost per unit for high-volume loads
  • βœ“Best for: 10+ pallets, time-critical, high-value, or sensitive freight
πŸ“¦

Less Than Truckload (LTL)

  • βœ“Shared truck space with other consignments
  • βœ“Multiple stops and depot transfers typical
  • βœ“Longer transit times β€” freight consolidated with others
  • βœ“More handling at multiple transfer points
  • βœ“Lower cost for smaller loads β€” pay only for space used
  • βœ“Best for: 1–9 pallets, regular smaller shipments, non-urgent freight

Service Benefits

Why Choose Speed Post FTL Freight

Dedicated Vehicle β€” No Co-Loading

Your freight occupies the entire truck. No other consignments, no shared space, no risk of your goods being mixed with or delayed by other freight.

Faster Direct Transit

No depot stops, no terminal transfers, no hub-and-spoke routing. Your truck goes directly from your pickup address to the delivery destination β€” the fastest road freight option available.

Minimum Handling, Minimum Risk

Freight is loaded once at pickup and unloaded once at delivery. Fewer handling points means significantly lower risk of damage, loss, or delay compared to LTL freight.

Lower Cost Per Unit at Volume

FTL cost is spread across your entire load β€” the more pallets or tonnes you move, the lower the per-unit cost. At high volumes, FTL is significantly more cost-effective than multiple LTL bookings.

All Freight Types Handled

General palletised freight, oversized loads, heavy machinery, refrigerated goods, and dangerous goods β€” our fleet configurations cover all FTL freight requirements.

Priority Scheduling

FTL bookings are priority-scheduled β€” your freight moves on your timeline. We accommodate urgent same-day dispatch and scheduled regular interstate runs alike.

Fleet Options

FTL Vehicle Configurations

The right FTL vehicle depends on your freight type, volume, and any special handling requirements. Speed Post can arrange the following configurations β€” advise us of your freight details when requesting a quote:

πŸš›

Semi-Trailer (Standard)

The most common FTL configuration β€” enclosed dry van semi-trailer suited to general palletised freight, boxed goods, and most commercial cargo.

Capacity: ~60–70 cubic metres, up to ~40–50 tonnes gross

🧊

Refrigerated (Reefer) Truck

Temperature-controlled FTL for perishable goods, food products, pharmaceutical supplies, and any freight requiring a controlled environment during transit.

Best for: Food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, temperature-sensitive cargo

πŸ—οΈ

Flatbed / Open Deck

Open deck configuration for oversized or out-of-gauge freight that cannot be enclosed β€” machinery, steel, building materials, and large industrial equipment.

Best for: Oversized machinery, steel, construction materials, industrial loads

πŸš›

B-Double

Two trailer units connected behind a prime mover β€” maximum road freight capacity for high-volume loads on approved interstate routes across Australia.

Best for: Maximum volume interstate movements, bulk retail stock, FMCG distribution

πŸ”’

Curtainsider (Tautliner)

Side-access enclosed trailer for easy forklift loading from multiple sides β€” suited to palletised freight requiring side-loading at the delivery address.

Best for: Palletised goods, retail freight, manufacturing components

βš™οΈ

Specialised Configurations

Low-loader, extendable trailer, and other specialised configurations for oversize, over-height, or heavy haulage freight requiring permits and route planning.

Best for: Mining equipment, cranes, large machinery, abnormal loads

Equipment, spare parts, and supplies for mining and resources operations β€” including remote site deliveries on appropriate vehicles with necessary permits.

🌾

Agriculture & Food Production

Agricultural produce, food products, and rural freight β€” including refrigerated FTL for perishable goods moving from production regions to processing and distribution centres.

Common Questions

FTL Freight FAQs

Do I need to fill the entire truck to book FTL?

No β€” you don’t need to completely fill the truck. However, you do pay for the dedicated vehicle regardless of how much space your freight actually uses. FTL becomes cost-effective when you have enough volume that the per-unit cost is lower than booking equivalent LTL space. We’ll advise which option makes more financial sense for your load.

How is FTL pricing calculated in Australia?

FTL pricing is based on the distance between pickup and delivery, the weight and volume of your freight, the vehicle type required, and any special handling or access requirements. In Australia, a standard semi-trailer has a volume of approximately 60–70 cubic metres and a gross capacity of around 40–50 tonnes. We provide a fixed, all-inclusive quote once we have your freight details.

Can you transport dangerous goods via FTL?

Yes β€” FTL can be arranged for dangerous goods transport where our drivers hold the appropriate licences and certifications. Please advise us of the dangerous goods classification, UN number, and packaging details at the time of quoting so we can confirm capability and arrange the correct vehicle and documentation.

What documentation will I receive?

On delivery completion, you’ll receive a confirmation email with your consignment PDF, freight label PDF, and full tax invoice β€” all in one email, ready for your records and accounting reconciliation.
