What Is Container Transport

Professional Container Movements Across Australia

Container transport is the physical movement of ISO shipping containers by road — from ports and depots to facilities, construction sites, warehouses, or any destination across Australia. Unlike moving the goods inside a container, container transport moves the entire unit.

Speed Post arranges container transport using appropriate vehicles — sideloaders, tilt trays, and flat-bed semi-trailers depending on the container size, site access, and placement requirements. We handle all standard container configurations including general purpose, high cube, open top, and flat rack containers.

Whether you’re moving a container from a port to your facility, relocating storage containers between sites, or transporting commercial goods interstate in a container — Speed Post manages the logistics from start to finish.

What Speed Post Handles

All Container Sizes. All Container Types.

  • 10ft containers — compact units for smaller storage or freight movements, approx. 1,500kg empty
  • 20ft containers — the standard international unit (1 TEU), 6.06m long, suited to most commercial freight and storage needs
  • 40ft containers — double the length of a 20ft (2 TEU), 12.19m long, for high-volume freight or large-scale interstate movements
  • 48ft containers — Australian domestic size, used primarily on road and rail for high-volume domestic freight corridors
  • High cube, open top & flat rack — specialist container configurations handled on request — contact us to discuss
Container Size Guide

Which Container Size Do You Need?

Choosing the right container size depends on your volume of freight, the distance, and your site requirements. Here’s a quick reference guide to the most common sizes we transport:

📦
10ft

10ft Container

External: 3.0m (L) × 2.44m (W) × 2.59m (H)
Empty weight: ~1,500kg

Best for: Small freight movements, compact storage, short-distance transport, or where site space is limited.

📦
20ft

20ft Container (1 TEU)

External: 6.06m (L) × 2.44m (W) × 2.59m (H)
Empty weight: ~2,200kg

Best for: Standard commercial freight, port-to-warehouse movements, general cargo, and medium-volume interstate transport.

📦
40ft

40ft Container (2 TEU)

External: 12.19m (L) × 2.44m (W) × 2.59m (H)
Empty weight: ~3,700kg

Best for: High-volume freight, large-scale commercial movements, import/export cargo, and interstate bulk transport.

📦
48ft

48ft Container

External: ~14.6m (L) × 2.44m (W) × 2.59m (H)
Australian domestic standard size

Best for: Domestic road and rail freight corridors where maximum volume is required — common in Australian retail and FMCG supply chains.

🏗️
High Cube

High Cube Containers

Available in 20ft and 40ft
Extra height: 2.89m (H) vs standard 2.59m

Best for: Tall or bulky cargo that exceeds standard container height — furniture, large machinery, and voluminous lightweight goods.

⚙️
Specialist

Flat Rack & Open Top

Available on request
For oversized or out-of-gauge cargo

Best for: Machinery, industrial equipment, and oversized items that cannot be containerised in a standard closed unit.

Common Use Cases

Who Uses Container Transport

Container transport is used across a wide range of industries and scenarios. Here are the most common reasons businesses and individuals book container transport with Speed Post:

🚢

Port to Warehouse

Import containers collected from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Fremantle, or Adelaide ports and delivered directly to your facility or distribution centre.

🏗️

Construction Site Delivery

Site office containers, storage containers, and building materials transported to construction sites — including difficult access locations using appropriate vehicle configurations.

🏭

Facility to Facility

Moving containers between your own sites, between suppliers and customers, or from warehouse to distribution centre — single container or multiple units.

📦

Interstate Freight in a Container

Packing commercial goods into a container for interstate transport — a cost-effective and secure alternative to multiple standard freight movements for high-volume shipments.

⛏️

Mining & Resources

Container transport to and from mining sites and resource operations — including remote locations that require specialist access planning and appropriate vehicle selection.

📤

Export Container Positioning

Empty or loaded containers repositioned to port or freight terminals for export — coordinating timing with vessel schedules and port requirements.

Before You Book

Site Preparation for Container Delivery

To avoid delays or additional charges, please ensure your delivery site meets the following requirements before scheduling your container transport:

📐

Adequate Space & Access

Ensure sufficient space for the transport vehicle to manoeuvre. A 40ft container on a tilt tray requires considerable clearance in front of the drop-off point. Advise us of any access restrictions when quoting.

No Overhead Obstructions

Check for overhead power lines, tree branches, awnings, or height restrictions along the access route and at the placement area. Obstructions can prevent delivery and result in additional charges.

🏗️

Firm, Level Ground

The placement area should be on firm, reasonably level ground that can support the weight of the container. Soft, unstable, or steeply sloped ground may prevent safe placement.

Important: If your site has restricted access, overhead obstructions, or difficult ground conditions, please advise our team at the time of quoting. We’ll recommend the appropriate vehicle and approach — and may require a site inspection for complex placements. Failure to disclose site conditions may result in a failed delivery and futile call-out fee.

Common Questions

Container Transport FAQs

Do I need to be present when the container is delivered?

Yes — someone should be on-site to direct placement and confirm the container is positioned correctly. Our driver will place the container as directed, but access conditions and final positioning need to be confirmed on arrival.

What vehicle will be used to deliver my container?

The vehicle type depends on your container size and site access. Sideloaders are ideal for precise placement in tight spaces. Tilt trays are efficient for straightforward deliveries with open space. Flat-bed semis are used for long-haul transport. We’ll confirm the right vehicle when quoting based on your access details.

Can you collect containers from Australian ports?

Yes — we collect from all major Australian port terminals including Port Botany (Sydney), Port of Melbourne, Port of Brisbane, Fremantle Port (Perth), and Port Adelaide. Advise us of your container number, release details, and any port-specific requirements when booking.

What documentation will I receive?

On completion of transport, you’ll receive a confirmation email with your consignment PDF, freight label PDF, and full tax invoice — all in one email for your records and accounting.
